The next generation of minimally invasive surgery will soon be offered to Royal Bournemouth Hospital’s prostate cancer patients using a robot that improves surgical outcomes and enables patients to leave hospital sooner.
The Da Vinci robot offers higher degrees of vision, control and dexterity than a human surgeon and will be controlled by the Trust’s consultant surgeons from an operating console in the theatre. The surgeons will be able to visualise the operation in magnified, high definition via the console and plan to offer the first procedures to patients from October.
Consultant Urologist Mr Kevin Turner said: “This is the first robot of its kind in Dorset and we are delighted to be able to offer our patients this type of surgery. Until now patients wishing to have robotic surgery have had to travel to other centres, the closest being Reading, Bristol, Exeter and London, so this is excellent news for cancer patients in our region.”
The purchase has been made possible as a result of reinvesting income from private patient care provided at RBH organised through a local charity, The Bournemouth Healthcare Trust.
