A rowing challenge event on 14 July, which sees teams of four complete a 5,000-metre distance in 30 minutes, has been launched by the Bournemouth Hospital Charity.
Rowers will row the same distance as Lymington to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight but, won’t have the usual wind, rain or choppy waters to deal with as the event will take place at Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
The event aims to raise money to replace a piece of equipment that will help patients needing to strengthen their hamstring leg muscles. The new ‘Leg Curl’ kit will be used in the Physiotherapy Department at the hospital and will benefit over 100 patients each year who are recovering from knee ligament reconstructive surgery.
James Creasey, Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, said: “The new machine will be a fantastic resource to have and will make a huge difference to our patients.
“Patients can get on and off and it has a far greater variety of resistance settings making it possible to use whether you have just had your knee replaced or are a semi-professional footballer recovering from knee ligament surgery. The existing, old equipment has served us well but is more than 20 years old and is ready for retirement.”
Teams of four will take it in turns to row five minutes each over the 30-minute time slot and registration costs £25 per person. Rowers are encouraged to raise sponsorship money with prizes being offered from Village – The Hotel Club for the top team and individual fundraiser.
