The new BDO World Darts Champion, ‘Scotty Dog’ Mitchell, returned to his home club to receive a hero’s welcome the day after winning the title.
The Bransgore farmer’s kid turned darts champion plays regularly at West Moors Memorial Hall Social Club and his mates gathered to present him with a framed photograph which will be hung in pride of place on the club’s wall in honour of his win.
Scotty was meant to be playing a match, but the media storm that has surrounded him since his win at Lakeside Country Club on Sunday evening (11 January) meant he was running behind schedule.
“I turned up a bit late and couldn’t play, but everyone gave me a standing ovation,” he said.
Despite his world title, he says he will continue playing regularly in West Moors competing in the Wimborne League. “West Moors is a welcoming club and our team moved here about a year ago after the White Heather, where we used to play, closed for a while. We’ve remained here ever since.”
Pete Holden, a committee member of the social club said, “He was given a rapturous welcome by his fellow darts players and other club members, who are all extremely proud and happy for Scotty. It was a well deserved win by a popular and modest man, who has dedicated himself to being the best in the world.
“Scotty gladly spent a long time sharing his success with the many well wishers and supporters who turned up for the occasion.”
An interview with ‘Scotty Dog’ will be published in the next 4Dorset magazine (February issue). Find out what advice he gives to anyone aspiring to become a World Darts Champion.
