The Hamworthy Park ‘Join In Sports Festival’ returned for a fantastic fifth year last weekend, featuring Rossmore Leisure Centre’s Wheelchair Rugby team.
Enabling children of all ages to try out a huge variety of sports and activities, the festival, which took place on Sunday 24 July, saw over 600 local people taking part.
Activities included water-sports, football, rugby, martial arts, and orienteering. Crowd-pulling demonstrations by Rossmore Leisure Centre’s own Wheelchair Rugby team wowed the public, and the team allowed participants to experience a disability sport. Samba Panache, Sean Burgess Bootcamp, and Poole Amateur Boxing Club also featured.
The varied activities, which were all run by local clubs and trainers, aimed to promote an active and healthy lifestyle, as well as allowing children the chance to take part in a potential new hobby.
Every child at the event was given a further boost with a complimentary ‘activity passport’, which will allow them to attend further sessions for free at local sporting clubs.
Kevin McErlane, Head of Culture and Community Learning, Borough of Poole, was extremely pleased with the turnout on the day. “It is great to see so many local clubs engaging with the community and offering the chance to try out a new sport for the first time.
“The opportunity to have fun, while trying something new, is sure to encourage people to take up a new sport, and will get the people of Poole even more excited for the 2016 Olympics, increasing the support and interest in our GB Athletes, who are working so hard in Rio.”
