Household Waste Recycling Centre in Nuffield Road
A visit to Poole’s Household Waste Recycling Centre had devastating consequences for Beacon Hill couple Les and Gill Sherlock.
They recently visited the Household Waste Recycling Centre in Nuffield Road to dispose of their garden waste. Whilst tipping the waste into the skip, Les’ wedding ring slipped off his finger.
Les had recently lost quite a bit of weight due to ill health and the thought of losing his wedding ring after 48 years of marriage was too much to bear. Staff were quick to help the couple, who were becoming quite upset over the incident. They took their telephone number and said they would try to find the ring and call them back.
Three operatives cordoned off an area, and proceeded to sift through the green waste contained in the 35 yard skip. They searched on their hands and knees for over half an hour before they found the ring.
The couple returned to the tip and were thrilled to retrieve the ring.
Mr Sherlock said: “As committed Christians, when we got home my wife prayed that God would lead the men to my ring; but I was inconsolable, knowing it was impossible they could find a small ring in a huge skip about one-third full of garden waste. When we returned to the tip and I was able to replace it on my hand, I completely fell apart, hardly being able to believe it. I will be forever grateful for the honesty, integrity, persistence and care of the men at the Waste Recycling Centre for a rather stupid and (at the time) vulnerable fellow-human being; and I am delighted to have the opportunity to express this.”
Ian Poultney, Environmental Development Manager, Borough of Poole, said: “Our staff at the tip are always very helpful and provide a high level of customer service. So it’s not surprising that they were moved by this incident and wanted to help the couple in any way they could, even though they knew there was a slim chance of finding the ring. We’re just pleased the guys did find it and there was a very happy outcome after all.”
