Programmed, promoted, staged and managed by young people, The Study Break is a multi-media live music event at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, on Friday 20 May.
Emerging Americana outfit New Desert Blues headline the show just a week before they appear on the same stage as Duran Duran, Primal Scream and Public Enemy at the Common People festival in Southampton. Also on the bill are EMMAY, the youthful sibling trio from Hampshire featuring Aimée, Freya and Ross Mackenzie who’ve already opened for the likes of Nizlopi, Show of Hands and Blair Dunlop.
The Concert Hall will be transformed with projections and original artwork. Keen to include as many of their school friends as possible in the project, the Young Programmers are also selecting music by their peers to be showcased between live acts.
Open to all ages but especially aimed at those who are studying hard for exams, The Study Break is produced by the first intake of the Young Programmers scheme at Lighthouse, which is enabling young people to gain valuable creative experience and training in areas such as programming, sound and lighting, and writing and reviewing. The scheme is aimed at schools, young people, artists and anyone interested in practical, real-world learning in a thriving arts organisation.
“I applied for the scheme because I have always been interested in performing and I wanted an opportunity to learn about other sides of the industry,” says young programmer Maddie Thorp.
“I think the course has been really good and I have enjoyed learning all about sound and stage lighting,” adds young technician Alexander Wadman. “I think it is a great achievement of all the students to be able to help with an actual show.”
Emma Bovey, Lighthouse events manager, comments, “Lighthouse is a fantastic resource centre for the local community and the wider region. It is amazing to see young people utilising those resources with such enthusiasm and taking this unprecedented opportunity for learning to gain hands-on knowledge of how it works.”
“Young programmers enables us to engage much more directly with the schools and communities we serve,” says Sara St George, head of sales and marketing for Lighthouse. “The take-up has surpassed all expectations and we are indebted for its success to our generous supporters who ensure we continue to provide new and exciting creative opportunities such as this.”
