Poole Quay welcomed the fourth annual Cycle Celebration last week, with thousands of visitors attracted by the cycling activities and information on offer.
Now a regular event in the cycling calendar, the Poole Quay Cycle Celebration this year featured the Animal WD-40 Action Sports tour. The team amazed crowds with spectacular aerial bike displays by World Champion trials rider Ben Savage, mountain bike rider Tom Cardy and James Jones on BMX.
Visitors also flocked to enter the hotly-contested ‘Bling Your Bike’ competition, which was judged by the Mayor and Mayoress of Poole. First prize for the Bike of the Night 2014 was presented to Lydia Roskilly for her butterfly-themed bike, with second prize for Katie Brown’s Disney-themed design and third prize won by Noah Kerslake with his Commonwealth Games bike. A cycling themed colouring competition was also busy all evening, attracting over 160 entries for the first prize of a JD Bug Scooter which was won by 4 year old Phoebe Burt.
The Mayor, Cllr Peter Adams said: “It was fantastic to see so many of our residents and visitors taking to two wheels and joining us for the Cycle Celebration. The entries for the Bling Your Bike competition were brilliantly creative – it was a difficult task to choose the winners. We hope that we have encouraged many more people to discover how enjoyable cycling can be.”
The crazy bike area was extremely popular, with children able to try out their own tricks on circus bikes including a unicycle, half-sized penny farthing and a reverse-steering bike.
Information about cycling was available from the Borough of Poole, Sustrans, Dorset Cyclist Network and Bournemouth BMX club.
