West Moors residents snap up free trees
Over 60 residents from West Moors snapped up the chance of picking up a free sapling from their town council at the weekend.
The free tree initiative supports the council’s commitment towards the town reaching a carbon-neutral status by 2030. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to support the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) project.
On Saturday 19 February, over 60 residents snapped up the free saplings, which were given away between 10am and 12noon, by West Moors Town Council.
On offer were blackthorn, crab apple, dog rose, goat willow, hawthorn and rowan. The new copse behind the skatepark, where 105 saplings were planted by the local community in January (donated by the Woodland Trust), will be the new home for the saplings that weren’t collected, along with an additional 200 recently purchased by the council.
For this, there will be a second community tree planting session. To find out more visit Facebook (@WestMoors TC) or check our www.westmoors-tc.gov.uk.
As well as producing oxygen and removing harmful carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, trees create beautiful, uplifting outdoor environments that provide new habitats for wildlife.
A town council spokesperson said, “Thank you to everybody who came along to pick up their free tree. It was wonderful to see you all. It also continues to prove that West Moors residents share our commitment to create a greener place to live.”
