An eyesore recycling site to close due to fly-tipping. Councils have been left with no choice but to close a mini recycling centre in Hurn after continued abuse by fly-tippers.The Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) will remove its ‘bring-banks’ on Avon Causeway on 1 August in response to concerns the site has become an unsightly dumping ground. Items illegally tipped there have included washing machines, mattresses, builders’ rubble and tyres. The borough council even invested in CCTV cameras to deter tippers only to have them stolen. Cllr Margaret Phipps, Chair of Hurn Parish Council and a borough and county councillor, said: “I am pleased the Dorset Waste Partnership has responded to residents’ concerns about the scale of abuse at the site. The problem has become increasingly urgent, with the area attracting more and more waste daily. Repeated efforts to combat fly-tipping have had little effect and removal of the banks is now the only option to stop it for good.”
