Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) is holding a volunteer recruitment day at the Chesil Beach Centre, to offer opportunities for local people to get involved with conservation projects in the Weymouth and Portland area.
The recruitment event will be held on Tuesday 8 July, with two sessions running throughout the day, beginning at 11am and 2pm. A series of talks by DWT conservation officers and question and answer sessions will be run to inform local people how they can get involved with activities such as marine surveys, restoring wildflower grasslands or helping out at the Chesil Beach visitors centre.
Ros Manning has been a volunteer at the Chesil Beach Centre for two years. She said: “I have always been interested in wildlife and it has brought me so much enjoyment over the years that I wanted to give something back. I find that volunteering brings many personal rewards, including a sense of well-being. It’s nice to interact with people and the environment.”
Emily Brown, DWT’s Weymouth and Portland Centres Co-ordinator said: “Weymouth and Portland is an important place for wildlife and our volunteers are a highly valued part of DWT’s conservation work in Weymouth and Portland. There are lots of different opportunities, from helping at the visitors centre at Chesil Beach or Lorton Meadows, to taking part in our conservation projects, such as restoring wildflower grasslands. We are looking for people who are interested in wildlife and the local area, and would like to learn more. Volunteering is a brilliant chance to get outside, meet new people and gain new experiences.”

I live on Portland and would love to find some local volunteer conservation work. Until recently I’ve been part of a small team working weekly on a Hawk and Owl Trust reserve in Somerset. I would love to find something more local. I am a recently retired teacher and would love to help…I feel I have quite a lot of experience and quite a bit on time on my hands…
