Taking up the national Fair Trade Fortnight (24 February – 9 March) theme of
ABOLISH the UNFAIR BANANA, the Wimborne Town Fair Trade Steering
Group is holding a campaign day on Saturday, 1st March between 11am and 3pm.
There’ll be:
- Banana fritters frying
- Banana smoothies peddling (on our bicycle-driven smoothie maker)
- Banana cake and muffin sampling
- Banana recipe cards circulating
- Banana facts and figures astonishing
Wimborne Town hasn’t got far to go to abolish the unfair banana. The Co-op & Waitrose
in town stock only fairly traded bananas, so we plan to add energy to the national campaign
to abolish the unfair banana and to demonstrate that small-scale banana producers,
especially from Latin America and the Caribbean, can benefit from fair trade terms which
ensure that farmers are paid a living wage and investment is made in their localities.
“That’s why it will be so good to have a banana producer with us on March 1st, Dorothy
Agard from WINFA, the Windward Islands Farmers Association – farmers from Dominica,
St Lucia and St Vincent who sell 99% of their produce into the fair trade market”,
commented Robert Pearce, convenor of the Wimborne Town Fair Trade Steering Group. “So
come and meet Dorothy and support Wimborne as it goes bananas and takes on the giants
of unfair trade in ways that
- Attract attention
- Tempt our taste buds
- Enable us to choose fairness in our everyday shopping”
