Junior member Izzy, age 10, won both the Colin Carter Trophy for the Novice Class and the Delia Hudson Memorial Cup for the best Coelogyne orchid (Coelogyne cristata) at the Bournemouth Orchid Society’s spring show held at the Allendale Community Centre recently.

Izzy said, “The Bournemouth Orchid Society is fun and supportive and interesting. They support me a lot. I find them really funny as they like to have fun and joke, they’re like a massive family. Joining the Bournemouth Orchid Society was the best thing ever and I’m so lucky.” She has been a member for the past three years developing her skills considerably.

Her mother, Stephanie, also a member, said: “The fantastic support that she has received from the society has had a positive impact on her confidence in all aspects of her life and was vital during lockdown.

”Children can learn so many life skills in growing, it helps their education, builds their confidence, teaches responsibility and so much more.”

Footfall at the family friendly spring show was up considerably according to publicity officer Nicholas Fry and traders were busy. Attractions included a huge variety of display orchids, a re-potting and instruction service plus many orchids and accessories for sale.

New for 2022, BOS launched a learning zone, with special focus on joint parent and child hands-on activities provided free of charge. The interactive, family inclusive learning experience proved popular. There were crafty things to make, quizzes and a mini laboratory providing a ‘window’ into the world of orchids.
