20mph speed limits coming to roads across Dorset
New speed limits are to be introduced in several areas of Dorset in the coming months – and more could follow.
Motorists will have to watch their speed in the Allenview Road/Burts Hill area of Wimborne as 20mph speed limits are being introduced in late September/October.
In mid to late September, 20mph limits will also be introduced in Child Okeford and Winterborne Kingston, and in late September/October in Cheselbourne and Okeford Fitzpaine.
Since the introduction of Dorset Council’s 20mph policy in 2022, town and parish councils have been able to apply for the lower speed limits where appropriate. The local councils must be able to demonstrate significant community support before they apply.
Cllr Jon Andrews, Cabinet member for Place Services, said: “The policy has provided officers with a framework for dealing with community-led requests.
“We offer advice and support to local towns and parishes seeking to improve and promote road safety, whether through 20mph limits and zones or other approaches.
“These schemes are the result of a thorough process that begins with community interest. Each application is carefully assessed against clear criteria to ensure that a 20mph scheme will give the maximum benefit for the affected communities.
“This initiative is a direct response to residents’ concerns about safety and wellbeing in their neighbourhoods. It aims to deliver the greatest benefit in areas where people live, walk, cycle or use mobility aids, helping to create healthier, safer streets for everyone.”
The limit could soon be introduced in 10 other areas of Dorset including Sandy Lane and Victory Oak in St Leonards and in Upton, as Dorset Council has received further applications for 20mph schemes which are due to go to public consultation in October.
Residents interested in the introduction of new 20mph speed limits in their local area should contact their town or parish council or their local Dorset councillor.
