New spectacles can be expensive and unaffordable in many parts of the world, yet old glasses are often thrown away in this country. Wimborne and Ferndown Lions, along with other Lions clubs, have been collecting unwanted specs for recycling and distribution in Third World countries, where eye care is often unavailable and lens making facilities are non-esxistent.
This year Wimborne and Ferndown Lions provided the local SPECTREK 2013 collection centre. The club itself has collected 3,700 pairs and the total amassed from the area is over 22,000 pairs. Bournemouth, Boscombe, Christchurch, Lymington, Poole and Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Clubs all contributed as have local opticians and doctor’s surgeries. The cost of the collection scheme is borne by the Lions and is calculated at around 5p per pair of glasses.
