£3.4 million to be spent on roads in Redhill area of Bournemouth
Works starts on 31 March to construct new walking and cycling paths, crossings and street lighting improvements.

Motorists planning to travel via the Redhill area of Bournemouth in the next three months will need to allow extra time for their journeys as work is to begin on roads in the area from 31 March. This will include one kilometre of road resurfacing along Wimborne Road.
Works totalling £3.4m will include the construction of new walking and cycling paths, crossings, and road junction and streetlighting improvements at Redhill Roundabout and the Muscliffe Lane/Castle Lane West junction.
The work begins with carriageway resurfacing on the heavily trafficked Wimborne Road, from Northbourne Roundabout to Ferncroft Road, followed later by Redhill Roundabout to just east of Muscliffe Lane. Sustainable road ‘recycling’ construction methods will be used where possible, reusing existing road materials.
The junction of Muscliffe Lane and Castle Lane West will also see major improvements with the installation of a new toucan crossing over Muscliffe Lane allowing people to walk and cycle across the road in one stage, replacing the current staggered arrangement. A new shared use path will be built by the parade of shops linking into the quiet walking and cycle route along Wimborne Road service road. The traffic signalised junction will also undergo major refurbishment with the latest smart, energy-efficient technology installed to improve traffic flow for all road users.
Improvements at Redhill Roundabout include a new shared footway and cycleway around the roundabout, two new toucan crossings across Redhill Avenue and Wimborne Road, and a new parallel crossing over Redhill Drive. Junction improvements and the installation of tactile paving will also be undertaken at Park Lane. The improvements will link into the bus and pedestrian improvements and cycle lane on Whitelegg Way, the advisory cycle lane on Redhill Avenue, the river path and cycleway along the River Stour and the quiet route along Wimborne Road service road to Muscliffe Lane.
Construction of the improvements, funded through central government’s Challenge Fund, Local Transport Fund and Transforming Cities Fund, are due to complete in October 2025.
The work will be phased to minimise disruption. The first phase of work, starting on 31 March, will see road resurfacing undertaken at Wimborne Road from Northbourne Roundabout to Ferncroft Road. This is expected to complete in late April.
To enable this, Wimborne Road will be closed to westbound traffic from Northbourne Roundabout to East Howe Lane for the duration of the works. A diversion will be in place via Whitelegg Way, Redhill Avenue, Columbia Road and East Howe Lane. Wimborne Road will remain open to eastbound traffic.
Access for emergency services and for people walking, wheeling and cycling will be maintained throughout the work.
The improvements at the Muscliffe Lane/Castle Lane West junction will follow in May as well as resurfacing Wimborne Road from Redhill Roundabout to just east of Muscliffe Lane.
The final phase, due to take place from June 2025, will focus on the improvements at Redhill Roundabout.
The planned work schedule is subject to change. For the latest information about the project, visit www.bcpcouncil.gov.uk/redhill.
Cllr Rich Herrett, portfolio holder for Destination, Leisure and Commercial Operations at BCP Council, said: “We’re pleased we’ve been able to secure money from central government to improve transport infrastructure improvements around Redhill. Redhill Roundabout is a busy pinch point for cars and navigating it by bike or foot can be daunting. The new paths and crossings will enable people, including local schoolchildren, to walk and cycle safely around the roundabout away from traffic and continue their onward journeys to Northbourne, Moordown and Muscliff.
“The improvements at Muscliffe Lane are also welcome, creating connectivity across the junction towards Northbourne. It’s great to see road junction upgrades too, as well as the road resurfacing on Wimborne Road, fixing potholes and ensuring the road remains fit for purpose for the thousands of cars and vehicles using it every day.”
The improvements at Redhill Roundabout/Muscliffe Lane/Castle Lane West junction form part of BCP Council’s long-term ambition to create a continuous sustainable travel route to and from Merley and Christchurch. Work completed to date along this route includes the improvements along Whitelegg Way and Magna Road (from Gravel Hill to Wood Lane).
