There is a red hot chilli pepper grown in Dorset. It’s called the Dorset Naga and ranks among the hottest in the world. Be warned when you use it. Cook it whole and remove before serving otherwise you may need to source additional toilet roll.

Dorset is one of the few counties in England without a motorway, however, local people have been heard to call dual-carriageways “motorways”. Ah, don’t you love Dorset?

The bendiest road in Britain is in Dorset. Known as Zig Zag Hill it starts at Cann Common near Shaftesbury and continues for about three-quarters of a mile to Tollard Royal. The hairpins will genuinely drive you round the bend!

Studland Bay has a colony of breeding spiny seahorses. This fun fact has a downside. Studland is also a popular anchorage for yachts and the two don’t harmonise because boat anchors disturb the seagrass breeding ground. However, during lockdown, the seahorses have flourished.

There is a river in Dorset called the River Piddle, but don’t be tempted to piddle in it. An official notice can be found saying ‘the fouling of this river is prohibited offenders will be prosecuted’. Nearby villages are called Piddletrenthide and Piddlehinton. Legend has it that another two: Puddletown and Briantspuddle used to contain the word ‘piddle’ but changed their village titles to avoid embarrassing Queen Victoria when she visited.
