AFC Bournemouth joins campaign to end violence against women
The Bournemouth football club has released a video as part of a campaign to help keep women, girls and everyone in the community safe.
Earlier this week on Monday 25 November was White Ribbon Day, a day which acts as a call to action to end violence against women and girls.
The day is followed by 16 days of action to raise awareness and campaign against all forms of gender-based violence. As part of this global campaign, events are taking place across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
On Tuesday, AFC Bournemouth hosted 100 students from Years 9 and 10 at Vitality Stadium to take part in gender-based violence workshops followed by a one-hour tour of the stadium.
As part of the campaign, AFC Bournemouth has also released a video in partnership with Safer BCP as part of the campaign to keep women, girls and everyone in our communities safe.
The video depicts the different experiences of male and female fans walking home after a match. The woman feels fear and discomfort at being stared at, having two men walking behind her, and the prospect of walking down a dark passage to get home. The video also highlights some actions men can make to make women feel safer, such as by crossing the road instead of walking behind them.
AFC Bournemouth President of Business Operations Jim Frevola said: “We are pledging our commitment to White Ribbon Day to raise awareness of the worrying and increasing trend of violence against women and girls in our society.
“Let me be clear, this is not simply an AFC Bournemouth issue, or a football issue; this affects so many people in so many walks of life, and we feel it is important that we use our voice.
“The wide-ranging campaign ties into our year-long celebration of women, which forms part of the club’s long-term strategy to acknowledge and promote the various under-represented groups within our supporter base.”
