Classic examples of our local artistic heritage – including vintage Poole Pottery images – will be showcased at the Dorset Arts Fair, near Dorchester, this weekend.
The Dorset History Centre will be dipping into its archives to highlight some eye-catching creations from the past for the event at Kingston Maurward House this Saturday and Sunday (1-2 June).
On display will be images drawn from the archive holdings of Poole Pottery, plus sculptors Dame Elisabeth Frink and Mary Spencer Watson, including sketches of work and photographs. There will also be an opportunity to learn more about ‘Archiving the Arts’, a national strategy from The National Archives to help preserve the papers and records of artists.
The Dorset History Centre is jointly funded by Dorset County Council, Bournemouth Borough Council and the Borough of Poole. Its role in preserving key records of local artists and artistic organisations ensures that their work can be enjoyed by all in the years to come.
County archivist Sam Johnston said:
“There are some really fascinating images which will give people a fresh insight into the work of Poole Pottery and these legendary local sculptors.
“By collecting these records we can give them a second life and ensure that they become part of the county’s permanent record.”
