History can be spellbinding as children at Beaucroft Foundation School discovered on 16 June when they enjoyed a magical performance of Freya, a Viking Saga, as part of the thrilling new Wimborne History Festival.
The beautifully designed puppets and skillful puppeteers of Angel Heart and Rattlebox Theatre enthralled the children with their rendition of ‘Freya, a Viking Saga’.
Freya, a Viking girl and friend of the gods, must use her wits to escape a giant’s cooking pot and prove that friendship is stronger that the strength of a giant and more powerful than the magic of a god.
Illustrating to children the importance of friendship, the colourful performance brought two famous Viking myths vividly and humorously to life.
The children, aged between eight and 16, with special educational needs, were entranced by the performance. For some, this was their first experience of live theatre and of professional puppetry and they joined in enthusiastically.
Deputy Head Teacher, Diane Makariou said, “Beaucroft Foundation School is delighted to have had the chance to work with Wimborne History Festival and local partners to bring this charming performance to the school, the children took great enjoyment from the show. They remained positively engaged throughout and were all able to access the show at their own levels – it was a sensory, educational and fun experience for everyone. We would like to thank all those who were involved in providing us with this opportunity.”
Wimborne History Festival was awarded a community grant, through the East Dorset District Council ward budget funding scheme, by Colehill Ward Councilllor Janet Dover, which enabled the festival to provide the show for the children at Beaucroft School.
Wimborne History Festival is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Wimborne BID, East Dorset District, Wimborne Minster Town and Colehill Parish Councils.
