Runners from across the Wessex region were out in force at the Autism Wessex 10K run at the beautiful Somerley estate to mark a healthy and happy new year.
The run took place on Sunday 4 January and was a huge success with over 600 runners taking part in the 10K route through the beautiful Somerley grounds.
Becky Chalk, Community and Events Fundraiser for Autism Wessex said: “We were delighted to have been inundated with entries again this year and I would like to thank everyone who took part as we have now raised over £8000 from this event. Thanks to Meggitt Plc and Williams Thompson Solicitors for sponsoring the run and helping Autism Wessex to continue supporting those in our community affected by autism. I would also like to thank Alton Sports who provided our goody bags and as ever, the event would not have run so smoothly without the support of volunteers and community groups, who we are indebted to for their free help on the crisp winter morning.”
Autism Wessex is the regional charity supporting anyone affected by autism. The work is varied and far reaching and the charity rely heavily on donations from the public to buy new equipment and resources for the pupils at Portfield School, to maintain the free Information and Advice service and to continue growing their portfolio of adult residential homes, homes which offer a lifetime of support.
Marina Thomas from Meggitt said “We are delighted to have been part of the Somerley 10K event; we know the work Autism Wessex does is life changing for its users and we are proud to support a local charity. The amount raised by the runners is fantastic, well done everyone!”
Becky continues “We would encourage anyone keen to take part in one of our runs to sign up for our Summer 10k Run at Moors Valley on Friday 12 June at 7pm. There will be a 10k and fun run encouraging all the family to get involved.”
Details of the Summer 10k can be found via www.autismwessex.org.uk/event_calendar and anyone wanting to pre register can do so today. Anyone entering is encouraged to raise sponsorship for the charity to help boost funds.
