Bank Holiday Sunday call outs keep Poole lifeboat busy
Poole’s inshore lifeboat was out and about on the water on Bank Holiday Sunday (30 August).
The D Class was launched just before 5pm to take over a tow of a 29-foot yacht with two people on-board from Swanage inshore lifeboat. The yacht had encountered propulsion problems in Studland Bay, and the D Class brought the vessel back to Poole Quay Boat Haven.
The next call was to assist a three-metre speedboat drifting off Bournemouth pier with one person on-board. The speedboat couldn’t be located after a search and it is believed that the vessel may have restarted and headed back to Mudeford.
On returning through the harbour, the lifeboat was flagged down by a group of jet skiers. One of the jet skis had sunk and had to be towed back to Baiter slipway.
At 6.40pm, the lifeboat was tasked by UK Coastguard to a report of children in the water in the Rockley area, but this was cancelled. It was re-tasked to a broken down speedboat reported to be drifting off Shore Road with three people on board. When located the speedboat was found to be attached to one of the swim zone marker buoys to keep it from drifting further. Everyone on board was okay and the boat was towed back to Rockley.
Conditions in Poole Bay were flat calm with good visibility and no wind. The lifeboat crew were treated to a beautiful sunset and by the time the D Class had been refuelled, washed down and made ready for service it was 9.45pm.
