A former Bournemouth school pupil has been shortlisted for The Sunday Times Disability Sportswoman of the Year Award.
Swimmer and Bournemouth Collegiate Schools Alumnus Alice Tai, 19, made a shortlist of just five individuals for her outstanding contribution to disability sports.
Now in its 31st year, the awards aim to recognise the immense strength, determination and superhuman levels of hard work it takes to be a successful woman in sport.
Alice won gold for Team GB at the Paralympic games in Rio in 2017 and was awarded an MBE for her service to swimming when she was just 17. She continues to represent Great Britain in the SB9 and S10 classifications for swimmers with impaired muscle power.
Alice was born with bilateral talipes, otherwise known as club foot. After 14 operations to help her walk again, Alice’s ankles are now fused at a 90-degree angle.
The awards will be judged by a specialist panel, including swim legend Rebecca Adlington, Olympian Jessica Ennis-Hill and TV personality Gabby Logan.
Alice said, “It is such an honour to have been shortlisted for this award. Swimming was something I did as a hobby and I could have never imagined this outcome when I attended the BCS Sport Academy.”
The BCS Sport Academy allows pupils to combine their studies with high level, elite coaching from professionals in several sports. A personal school timetable creates an opportunity for talented young people to receive both coaching and an excellent education in school hours, allowing for a life outside of school and training.
Head Teacher Russel Slatford said, “We are so proud of Alice. Throughout her time at BCS she showed dedication and determination to her sport and deserves every bit of success that comes her way.”
You can vote for Alice to win at www.sportswomanoftheyear.co.uk. Voting Closes at the end of October and the winners will be revealed at a star-studded awards ceremony at the News UK’s London office on 1 November
