Concerned that pollinating insects aren’t benefiting from your garden? Tim Bucknall, landscape contracts manager at Stewarts garden centres has some straightforward tips to help you ‘bee’ friendly.
Choose plants that have open flowers so that the insects can reach the nectar and pollen from the centre of the flower. Double flowered varieties of plants are attractive but do not really benefit our pollinators, which include bees, butterflies and hoverflies.
Plant a spread of different flowers that will provide colour in your garden throughout the year and also sustain the pollinators.
“By following these tips alone you will make a big difference to the wildlife in your garden,” says Tim, who also manages the hives owned by Stewarts at their Broom Hill centre in Wimborne.
“We know that the honey bee population and other key pollinators are under threat so every flower can make a difference. We should praise councils for encouraging wild flower planting on roadsides and open public areas.”
