The annual Careers College Big Bang event at the Bournemouth & Poole College has inspired local Year 8 students by introducing them to the exciting career opportunities available to them within STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
Sponsored by Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), Southampton Solent University and The Bournemouth & Poole 14-19 Team, students from 16 schools across Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset each took part in activity sessions with the added opportunity to talk to leading employers, careers advisers and STEM professionals throughout their visit.
There were a variety of career-based, interactive and hands-on activities available. These included Robotics Programming delivered by Superior Seals, Outside Broadcasting by Solent University, Spiffing Soap by Bournemouth University, Evolution Made Simple by Southampton University along with a whole host of activities organised by the college itself.
One student commented: “It has made me realise that these career opportunities are amazing,” while another said: “I guess you can say this event has opened my eyes.”
David Pusey, Advice and Guidance Manager at The Bournemouth & Poole College said: “The Careers College Big Bang Event allows year 8 Students to experience STEM through practical and inspirational activities. Workshop providers from industry and The College open up the world of STEM careers to all students, including those who may not have traditionally considered such opportunities. These experiences help pupils to consider their options in a new light and possibly embark on STEM related courses and careers in later life.”
Sophia Basi, Student Recruitment Officer, Southampton Solent University said: “It was great to see so many young people attend this amazing STEM event and as a university we were all taken aback by their enthusiasm and engagement in all the activities we delivered. There was a real buzz and lots of positive energy around the college.
