Book club joy for Ferndown care home
Fairlawn Care Home residents enjoy hearing children read such books as ‘Mr Men’ and ‘Funnybones’.
Residents of Fairlawn Care Home in Ferndown have joined Parley First School pupils for a ‘book club’. The children pick a book and read aloud to the visitors from the Care South home, who listen and help them with words they don’t know.
Deputy Headteacher Julia Martin said: “The relationship with Fairlawn Care Home is quite new and when staff asked residents what they wanted to do, some said they’d love to do a monthly book club.
“We believe in a multi-generational community, and we work with a number of local care homes.
“The book club is monthly, and the children really look forward to it and reading to the care home’s residents.
“The residents also tell them stories about their lives, and everyone gets a lot out of it.
“Immersing the children in literature from an early age really benefits them throughout their lives.
“We live in a manic, digital world and the book club is a place where things slow down and children can benefit from 1:1 or 1:2 attention.
“And we were delighted when the residents and staff from Fairlawn presented us with some new books.”
Books read by the children include ‘Mr Men: The Night Before Christmas’ by Roger Hargreaves, ‘Funnybones’ by Janet and Allan Ahlberg, and ‘Love You More’ by Hanna Greene.
Tina Vincent, home manager, said: “It is wonderful to see our residents’ faces light up as the children read some of their favourite books to them.
“It reminds them of time spent with their own families in years gone by and gives them the chance to share the joy of story time with younger readers.
“At Fairlawn, our residents enjoy a wide range of activities both in the home and out in the local community and being part of these sessions is something they feel is a privilege and a joy to be part of.”
Parley First School is part of Southern Educational Trust.
