Bournemouth Arts Club stages 102nd exhibition
An art club where members are selected by a panel of long-standing members is holding an exhibition at the Red House Museum in Christchurch.
The Bournemouth Arts Club will be presenting its 102nd annual exhibition from 11 March to 23 April.
The club only recruits new members by selection.
A senior member said: “Some may say we are elitist. I suppose we are – and proud of it. Our annual exhibitions always maintain a particularly high standard of work.”
The membership selection process involves an interview before a panel of long-standing members. Applicants must present three finished works, a ‘work in progress’, plus sketchbooks and back-up material.
The Bournemouth Arts Club is not for beginners, or people for whom art is a casual pastime. The panel looks for a commitment to the work, an awareness and appreciation of historical and contemporary art, and a solid foundation in basic skills.
You can see results of this rigorous selection process at the Red House Museum, Quay Road, Christchurch BH23 1BU from 11 March–23 April, open Wednesday to Saturday 10am-4pm, Sunday 12noon-4pm. Admission is free. A selection of paintings, prints and 3D works of art will be on display and available for sale.
