Bournemouth hammer-wielding thief sent to jail
Dean Mitchener stole several items after breaking into a property in Acland Road, causing the occupant to flee.
A Bournemouth man who stole several items from a property while armed with a hammer has been jailed for 44 months.
On the evening of Sunday 19 January 2025, Dean Mitchener, 46, smashed through a back door to gain entry to a residential address in Acland Road.
The occupant was in bed at the time but fled the address after seeing the defendant.
Mitchener then proceeded to steal items including jewellery, gold and cash before leaving.
A detailed investigation ensued, and a scene examination was carried out. Blood was located near the back door of the property, which was linked to Mitchener through DNA analysis.
He was arrested and subsequently charged in connection with the incident.
Mitchener pleaded guilty to a charge of dwelling burglary and was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on Tuesday 21 October 2025.
Detective Sergeant David Went, of the Neighbourhood Crime Team, said: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim, especially as it occurred in their home and place of safety.
“Thanks to our enquiries, we were able to identify Dean Mitchener as the man responsible for this offence and bring him before the court to face justice.
“We recognise the impact burglaries have on victims when they happen, and as a force, we remain absolutely committed to reducing burglaries in the region and thoroughly investigating reported incidents to ensure that those involved are held accountable for their actions.”
