People are being urged to choose their treatment options wisely this bank holiday by The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RBCH).
The trust’s emergency department is expecting increased demand for its services as holidaymakers flock to the area, and the trust is appealing for the public to be mindful when deciding if the emergency department is the best option for their treatment.
Head of nursing for the emergency department, Sue Reed, said: “For life threatening emergencies, including heavy bleeding, chest pain, suspected stroke, severe burns, or for broken bones, we would absolutely want people to come to us in the emergency department or call 999 for an ambulance.
“If you’re in a less severe situation but still need treatment fast, there are lots of other options available. Choosing the right care for your needs may mean you’re actually treated faster.”
Across the county there are a number of healthcare options to consider:
- NHS 111 phone line service – People are encouraged to call 111 when in need of advice. The NHS 111 service is staffed by a team of fully trained advisers, supported by experienced nurses and paramedics. The NHS 111 teams offer healthcare advice and will be able to suggest the best health service to suit a patient’s needs. The line is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free from landlines and mobiles
- Pharmacy – Local pharmacists are clinically trained and able to help with headaches, coughs, colds, upset stomachs and much more
- Bank holiday GP services – Local GPs will be running clinics outside of their normal hours this weekend to give people access to appropriate care. People do not need to be registered with the relevant practice to attend an out of hours service. Visit www.dorsetccg.nhs.uk/involve/our-campaigns/stay-well/additional-gp-clinics.htm for information
- Minor injuries units – For those experiencing sprains, strains or minor injuries. Details of minor injuries units in Dorset, along with opening times, are available via www.dorsethealthcare.nhs.uk/services/pages/miu
- Emergency departments – For life threatening emergencies, including heavy bleeding, broken bones, chest pain, suspected stroke or burns, people are encouraged to attend their nearest emergency department or to call 999 for an ambulance
