Bournemouth pier zippers raise £4,000 for cancer support
Amongst the brave participants of the PierZip challenge were Wessex Wonder Women who raised more than £1,500 between them.
A total of 21 thrill-seekers aged between eight and the mid-70s took part in Wessex Cancer Support’s sponsored Bournemouth PierZip challenge raising more than £4,000.
Launching from the zip tower, participants raced each other over the sea to land on the beach.
Among them was New Milton resident, Jenny Moore, 50, who has been supported by Wessex Cancer Support’s Bournemouth centre since being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. She and five friends formed the ‘Wessex Wonder Women’ and raised more than £1,500 between them, taking on the challenge dressed as the DC superhero. In total, Jenny has raised £10,000 to help support other local people affected by cancer through various fundraising activities.
Jenny said: “Wessex Cancer Support has given me the most incredible support during my cancer diagnosis and have made a difficult journey much easier to navigate. So, I decided to take on this challenge and raise funds for them so they can carry on the vital work they do in supporting others coming to terms with cancer.”
Kate Shuttleworth, Wessex Cancer Support’s supporter engagement officer, who helped to arrange the event, said: “We don’t receive any government funding and are indebted to our wonderful fundraisers who go above and beyond to take on sponsored challenges and participate in events. It’s because of them that we can continue to provide free, local and personalised support to Jenny and others affected by cancer.
“It was a bit blustery and wet on the day of the PierZip and we think they’re all heroes for doing it. We’re also incredibly grateful to Rock Reef for organising the challenge, and Key West Restaurant who laid on a free drink and bacon bap for all the participants afterwards.”
