A Bournemouth school is celebrating after being judged the best performing school in Dorset for giving its students the most value from their education.
The recently published secondary school league tables show Oakmead Technology College had the highest ‘value added’ score across Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset.
This score is given to reflect how schools are enabling students of all abilities to exceed their expectations.
The national average score is ‘1,000’ and Oakmead scored an impressive 1025.5.
Only two other schools in Bournemouth scored more than 1,000 and none achieved as high a score as Oakmead.
It was a similar story in Dorset and Poole with only three schools in both areas scoring more than 1,000 points and none beating Oakmead’s score.
Executive Principal of Oakmead (now part of the newly formed Learning and Achievement Federation), Dr Annetta Minard, said, “We are delighted that the achievements of all our students is being recognised.
“The school has worked hard to ensure all students, whether they are the brightest academically or have special educational needs, are reaching their full potential.
“And this score shows we are succeeding in getting the very best from all of our students and we are incredibly proud of every single one of them.”
Since becoming an Academy, Oakmead has introduced a more creative curriculum – and students across the board have reaped the benefits.
The school has provided extra support with holiday clubs, homework clubs and weekend activities.
This has resulted in the school achieving its best ever GCSE results last year, with 97% gaining at least five A* to C grades.
The number of students achieving at least five A*-C grades including English and Maths was also up by 5% to 50%.
