Broadstone pupils raise thousands in school run
This year’s Broadstone Middle School fun run raised £13,000, which will benefit charities and the school.
Running certainly has it rewards for a Broadstone school.
This year’s Broadstone Middle School fun run raised £13,000 and in the last three years the event has collected more than £33,000 for the school and several charities.
The children taking part are challenged to complete a run of up to 5k and as part of the event pupils and staff are asked to wear a specific colour to represent the chosen charities.
For this year’s run, held on 21 May, the youngsters wore yellow, to show support for the Yolanda Moore Foundation (TYMF).
TYMF is a charity set up by Rhonda Moore, the CEO of Castleman Trust that the school belongs to, following the death of her daughter in a hit-and-run incident six years ago.
It supports ambitious young people aged between 15 and 24 from London, Dorset, Hampshire and Otago in New Zealand with funding, mentoring and practical help.
Some of the money raised will also go to Julia’s House, the local children’s hospice.
Danii Curtis, who organised the run with the PE team, said: “We have more than 650 children at the school and they all ran 1.5K, 3K or 5K on our school’s cross country route, finishing in the middle of our playing field.
“It was so nice to see a flood of yellow, enthusiastic, motivated and hardworking children throughout the event.
“We can’t thank our pupils and their families enough for raising such an incredible amount.
“Some of the funds will be used to support our creative arts and sports departments, to give children as many funded opportunities and experiences as possible.
“We were lucky that the run was held on a lovely day and as well as keeping the children fit and healthy, it allowed the children to collaborate, achieve and be creative and express themselves in a fun way.
“We were also fortunate to have been donated some fabulous raffle prizes including two football shirts signed by Manchester City and Newcastle United, along with a local gym membership.
“All those who took part will have a chance to win one of these rewards at our awards ceremony.”
Rhonda Moore, CEO of the Castleman Trust, said: “This event just gets bigger and the amount of money raised is incredible.
“I watched the start and the children loved it. There was a great atmosphere.
“I know both charities will be extremely grateful for the funds donated and the school will benefit from everybody’s efforts. I’m looking forward to next year.”
