Cardboard Campout challenge for Ferndown pupils
The Cardboard Campout Challenge 2025 has raised an impressive £10,095 for The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation (JTYAF).
Sixth form pupils at Ferndown Upper School now know what it’s like to spend a night in less than comfortable surroundings.
The students hosted the Cardboard Campout Challenge, which invited them to build innovative shelters using only cardboard and tape before camping out overnight in their creations. It proved to be a true test of creativity, resilience, and teamwork.
A total of 93 students took part, and during the evening a vibrant cardboard city took shape — featuring imaginative designs such as drawbridges, fireplaces, boot stores, a steam engine, fairy lights, and even a sofa.
The event was made possible through the tireless dedication of Ferndown Upper School staff, students, and the student Charity Team. The local community also played a vital role, generously donating materials and refreshments, including cardboard, gaffer tape, breakfast treats, and pizzas.
Support also came from Custom Creations, Superior Seals, Hunt Group, Trek Bike Shop, John Pipe, Sainsbury’s Ferndown, Lidl West Parley, Tesco Ferndown, Asda Bournemouth, and Domino’s. Students also received extremely generous backing from friends and family.
The funds raised will significantly enhance opportunities for young people in the area by providing bursaries and scholarships, and by supporting individuals from a range of organisations — including Ferndown Upper School. These grants will help nurture talented athletes, encourage creative pursuits, enable access to educational courses, and support participation in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and other life-changing experiences.
Earlier this year, one bursary enabled a Ferndown student to represent Dorset as one of 32 athletes selected for the National Schools’ Championships in Birmingham.
