Cerne Abbas Giant could meet his match
The secret’s out! A new Dorset giant half the size of the Wembley Stadium pitch is being created by many hands and will soon appear in Corfe Castle.
The monumental new creature, inspired by the mystery of the Cerne Abbas Giant is being created for the Dorset National Landscape by artist Becca Gill and her company Radical Ritual.
The artwork is based on the game Consequences, where you take it in turns to draw, fold the paper and pass it on. The theme focuses on working together to create something whole and is part of the national Nature Calling project.
Along with members of community groups, the new giant inspired by the myths and legends of the Dorset landscape, is being created following workshops and walks. The outcome is a fun project using natural dyes and materials to construct a giant piece of artwork for everyone to enjoy – reflecting and celebrating local landscapes.
Combining music, poetry, and ritual you’ll see the giant unveiled on the ancient hills of Somerset and Dorset later this month.
Becca Gill said: “We may have forgotten the stories our landscapes tell, but together, we can rediscover and inspire new tales of care, nurture, and community.”
As part of the Inside Out Dorset festival, the new giant will visit Corfe Castle on 20 & 21 September after appearing at Yeovil on 13 & 14 September. The initial unveiling will be available to watch online when you can find out if the Cerne Abbas Giant has really met his match.
