Taking fundraising to extreme heights, Brenden Howard, general manager of The Grove Hotel, a unique not-for-profit hotel for people with life-limiting illnesses, has abseiled 560ft (170m) down Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth in aid of Macmillan Caring Locally.
Brenden has raised over £500 for Macmillan Caring Locally’s ‘Brick By Brick’ appeal to build a new Macmillan Unit. Situated in Christchurch Hospital, the current Macmillan Unit has seen a significant increase in the number of referrals, from 581 patients in 2006 to over 1500 in 2017. To meet these demands, a new two-storey unit is needed to provide specialist palliative care to patients with advanced, progressive, incurable illnesses including cancer, motor neurone disease or heart and lung conditions.
As manager of The Grove, Brenden Howard works closely with Macmillan Caring Locally, which helps run the not-for-profit hotel, situated on East Cliff, Bournemouth.

The Grove hotel is specially designed as a holiday resort for people suffering from terminal illnesses and their families, friends, and carers. There is also a team of nurses on emergency call 24 hours a day.
Brenden Howard said, “The Abseil Challenge was certainly one of the most terrifying things I’ve done to date! However, it’s all been worth it to help raise a good sum of money for Macmillan Caring Locally. A special thank you goes to everyone who supported my cause and helped raise vital funds for the new unit.”
