Civil War exhibit to remain in Wimborne museum through half term
The ‘Rebellion and Revolt’ exhibition will continue in Wimborne’s Museum of East Dorset until Saturday 2 November.
An exhibition about the English Civil Wars and how they affected Dorset and Wimborne will remain open in Wimborne’s Museum of East Dorset through the upcoming school holidays to Saturday 2 November.
The ‘Rebellion and Revolt’ exhibition was due to close in mid-October, but its run has been extended due to popular demand. This also means it will be open for schoolchildren to visit during next week’s half-term break.
‘Rebellion and Revolt’ tells the story of Wimborne from the Civil Wars of the 1640s, through the Restoration and finally the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, ably portrayed by the town’s own Wimborne Militia, who have generously contributed to the exhibition along with artefacts from the English Civil War Society who brought the thrilling Battle of Wimborne to life in the town earlier this year.
The English Civil Wars saw England’s Parliament clash with the monarchy. The country was divided between the Roundheads – who supported Parliament and Oliver Cromwell – and the Cavaliers – royalists who supported King Charles I. ‘Rebellion and Revolt’ prompts visitors to ask which side they would have joined
Rob Gray, Museum of East Dorset’s collections and exhibition manager at Museum of East Dorset said: “Rebellion and Revolt isn’t just about battles and bloodshed. It’s about the agonising choices that ordinary Dorset residents faced during these turbulent times.
“Religious beliefs, political allegiances, and even family ties could pull you in opposing directions. This exhibition challenges visitors to consider the moral complexities of these conflicts and the potentially fatal consequences of picking the wrong side. “
‘Rebellion and Revolt’ can be visited until Saturday 2 November. Admission to the Museum of East Dorset costs £12 for adults, £5.50 for children aged five to 16, and is free for children up to the age of four. Tickets grant admission to the museum for up to 12 months. For more information, visit www.museumofeastdorset.co.uk
