'Cluck to be Notified' to give a loving home to a rescued chicken
Would you like to help save some of the 60,000 hens destined for slaughter this year by rehoming laying chickens as family pets?
If so, Easter could be just the time to welcome your own pet spring chickens by adopting laying hens from the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT).
You will find a ‘cluck to be notified’ list on the British Hen Welfare Trust’s website at www.bhwt.org.uk where you can add your name so you don’t miss out.
Founder of the BHWT, Jane Howorth MBE said, “People who adopt our hens always tell us how life-enriching their new feathery pets are. They have so much to give – affection, cuddles, a listening ear, and, of course, eggs.
“So, if 2022 is the year you want to welcome happy hens into your home, sign up to our waiting list now. That way, as soon as we have a rehoming event in your area, you’ll be contacted and before you know it, you’ll be collecting your new pet chickens and starting a great new adventure with them.”
Rehomings are currently paused due to the outbreak of Avian Influenza, but the BHWT hopes to be back up and running by spring. By booking your hens now you’ll be first in line to pick up your new pets at the next rehoming day in Dorset.
Every year, the BHWT saves around 60,000 hens from slaughter and rehomes them as loving family pets.
The British Hen Welfare Trust was established in 2005 by Jane Howorth and is Britain’s first registered charity concerned with rehoming laying hens while improving hen welfare across commercial and domestic sectors.
In the UK there are approximately 16 million hens kept in colony cages. The BHWT has so far found retirement homes as pets for over 860,000 ex-commercial hens, all of which were destined for slaughter.
