Andrew Scott, 27, of Winterborne Whitechurch, left home yesterday afternoon, (10 July), to go spear fishing but failed to return as expected.
Dorset Police was called at 8.55pm after a bag containing his belongings was located at White Nothe and his car was found parked at Ringstead Bay, five miles east of Weymouth.
Officers are concerned that Andrew may have come to harm in the water and searches have been carried out overnight, led by HM Coastguard. The search resumed this morning.
Andrew was possibly wearing a full black North Coast wetsuit, blue flippers and a snorkel. His bright orange dry bag containing car keys, mobile phone and clothing were found on the coastline.
Chief Inspector Bryan Duffy, of Dorset Police, said: “Our belief is that Andrew went spear fishing at Ringstead Bay.
“Extensive searches have been carried out overnight in a bid to find Andrew but these have not been successful.”
