Controversial Canford waste incinerator given environmental permit
The Environment Agency has granted a permit to a company proposing to build a waste incinerator in Canford Magna.
Plans for a controversial waste incinerator to be built in Canford Magna have taken a major step forward as the Environment Agency announced on Wednesday 11 June that it was granting an environment permit to the project.
MVV Environment Ltd has submitted an application to build the incinerator on the Canford Resource Park. The company wants to burn up to 260,000 tonnes of non-hazardous waste each year in the incinerator. The proposed facility will, if given permission, burn waste to produce energy in the form of electricity. Power from this process will be exported to the National Grid.
In order to build and operate the proposed incinerator, the company needs to be granted both an environmental permit (which it now has) and planning permission.
The Environment Agency reached its decision after an extensive public consultation. According to the agency, after considering all feedback from the local community and interested groups, the agency agreed that MVV had met all of the necessary criteria required for the environmental permit to be issued.
A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: “We have carefully considered all of the submissions and feedback we received during our public consultations, and we thank everyone who took the time to contact us with their views.
“This permit will ensure that robust levels of environmental protection are applied. Our permitting decision process is objective and based on the applicant demonstrating they will meet the legal requirements outlined in the permit.”
The permit sets the conditions which MVV must adhere to when operating the site. It covers the management and operation of the site and the control and monitoring of emissions.
Where an application meets the requirements of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations (2016), the agency must issue a permit.
The final permit and decision document can be viewed online here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/bh21-3bw-mvv-environment-limited-environmental-permit-issued-eprsp3127sfa001.
The incinerator has proven controversial as it will be built close to residential areas. It will feature a 110m tall chimney stack, and residents are concerned about the emissions it will generate from burning waste.
