Council warns Bournemouth residents of deadline for free voter ID
Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council is reminding residents that time to apply for free voter ID ahead of the election is running out.
With the general election fast approaching on 4 July, residents are being reminded that they will need to show photo ID when voting in person. Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council are also warning residents that the deadline to apply for free voter ID will run out at 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.
This is the first time at a general election that voters will need ID to receive their ballot paper in the polling station. Those without an accepted form of ID can apply online for a Voter Authority Certificate, at www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate or by applying for and submitting a paper form to elections@bcpcouncil.gov.uk.
Applicants must be registered to vote and will need to provide their date of birth, National Insurance number and a suitable photograph.
Accepted forms of ID include a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a UK or EEA drivers’ licence; and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass. Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo. A full list of accepted forms of photo ID can be found here.
Graham Farrant, acting returning officer at BCP Council, said: “As the deadline to apply for free ID fast approaches, it is important that BCP residents make sure they’re election ready.
“If you need any help with applying for free ID or want to request an application form, you can contact the electoral services team on 01202 123 400 or elections@bcpcouncil.gov.uk.”
Craig Westwood, director of communications, policy and research at the Electoral Commission, said: “Photo ID is now a requirement to vote at polling stations at the general election. If you do not have accepted ID, you can still apply for a Voter Authority Certificate, which is a free form of identification.
“The availability of free ID helps ensure elections remain accessible to all eligible voters. But it is crucial that anyone who needs one applies before the deadline. That date is fast approaching so don’t delay.”
The deadline to register to vote passed on 18 June. You can see a list of candidates for your local constituency here.
