An activity day with a difference takes place this summer, encouraging families to get creative with rubbish.

Part of the first New Forest Arts Festival, Trash into Treasures is a free ‘Art from Waste’ family drop-in day run by New Forest Transition on Sunday 12 June.
Activities on offer at the Lymington Community Centre event include making your own sculpture from junk, creating a musical instrument from waste, sewing, crafting, upcycling and more. Activities are free, 50p or £1, and refreshments will be available.
This unique event encourages families of all ages to get involved and learn about not only the problems waste causes, but the ways in which it can be valuable. Families can drop-in any time between 10.30am and 3.30pm to take part.
Transition members will be hosting a beach clean on Saturday 11 June to collect waste for their projects and welcome anyone interested to get involved.
Sarah Fawkes from New Forest Transition said, “Waste is something that was once useful and is now no longer wanted, for example old lighters, bottles and sandwich packs. It can end up in the marine environment, rivers and the countryside as well as within the town.
“It can cause all sort of problems, but with imagination it can be repurposed. By turning the problem on its head, and seeing waste as a resource, there are multiple benefits. We just need to know how and this is what we hope to achieve.”
Local artist Trudi Lloyd Williams will be running a workshop throughout the day, using waste as a material for sculpture. She will also be exhibiting previously commissioned pieces of art.
The New Forest Arts Festival is one of many projects within a Heritage Lottery Fund scheme called Our Past Our Future, led by the New Forest National Park Authority with 10 key partners. This is the first year of the Arts Festival, with around 40 events inviting people to celebrate the New Forest National Park’s landscape, culture and creative community.
