A rogue Dalek has landed in Heatherlands Community Centre ready for an alien invasion.
‘Other worlds and other forms of life’ is the topic for the 2013 Heatherlands Art Week. To celebrate this, artist Darrell Wakelam has been working with residents of the Heatherlands estate this week to build a life-size Dalek.
Over the last four days, children of all ages, grandparents and mums and dads have been assisting Darrell with the construction. It is made entirely of cardboard, masking tape, tissue paper and paint.
Heatherlands Art Week is organised by East Dorset District Council’s Arts and Culture Manager, Tracy Cooper with partnership funding from the district council, Neighbourhood Panel Zone 8, PACT and Synergy Housing.
Tracy said: “This project is organised and run with the community to enable local children to enjoy high-quality creative activities on their doorstep. The activities are key to introducing new skills, raising expectations, building self-esteem and combatting boredom during the long summer vacation. Each year we see the children come back for more positive experiences and watch them absorb all these new skills.”
Over the five days around 500 residents from the estate have participated in a variety of arts activities led by top artists from across Dorset. Tracy added, “This has included animation, film making, clay, mural painting, dance, mod roc, wand making, jelly fish making and, of course, Dalek building.”
The week has also been supported by local police community support officers from Dorset Police and by Dorset Fire and Rescue Service.
