Jane Stichbury, Chairman of the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch hospitals, is joining 16 other daredevils to wing walk for Bournemouth Hospital Charity (BHC).
The exhilarating 10 minute experience will take the brave to speeds of 130mph and will raise money for the charity’s Orchard Garden Project. BHC is looking for a further 13 volunteers to wing walk on 31 May from an airfield at Compton Abbas.
The Orchard Garden Project will help fund the landscaped gardens that will benefit patients being treated in the new Jigsaw Building being built at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. These include cancer and blood disorder patients and those being treated in the Women’s Health Unit.
The gardens, located by the new Jigsaw Building, will have different themed areas allowing patients to visit an outside setting that is safe and designed to enhance the healing power of gardens.
Jane said: “I’m really keen to support the charity by taking part in Bournemouth Hospitals Charity’s very first wing walk challenge. It’s a great cause and I really hope people feel inspired as I do to help.
“Patients spend many hours at the hospital receiving chemotherapy or renal dialysis and currently there is no NHS funding to develop any outside space for our patients.
“As chairman of our hospitals, I am really keen to help make the experience of patients even better and want to help make this project a reality.”
Barry Wilson, Fundraising Officer for BHC, said: “We were thrilled when Jane said she would take up the wing walk challenge for us. She’s a really active supporter and we’ll be there cheering Jane and our other brave wing walkers on.
“Recruitment for our first organised wing walk has been received really well. Places are limited so if you’re thinking about taking part then please don’t delay in getting in touch.”
Wing walkers must be aged between 18-65 years old, weigh no more than 12 stone 2lbs and raise £650 in sponsorship. Those aged between 65-75 years old can take part if they receive a GP’s declaration of good health.
