Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) is hosting a series of marine events designed to get youngsters and families out celebrating Dorset’s rich array of marine and coastal wildlife, as part of National Marine Week (Saturday 23 July to Sunday 7 August).
At the Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre, visitors will be able to find out about the largest animals living in Dorset seas, with a ‘Marine Giants Talk & Eggcase Hunt’ on Sunday 24 July, 11am – 12.30pm, and learn about the smallest animals at ‘Peculiar Plankton’ on Friday 29 July, 1pm – 3pm.
Take a trip on DWT’s Fleet Explorer to find out about other marine life living in the Fleet Lagoon, with trips running daily. There is a special cruise on Tuesday 26 July at 11.15am, where visitors can learn all about Marine Protected Areas and how they are helping our UK seas recover. Booking essential on 01305 206191.
The Fine Foundation Marine Centre in Kimmeridge will be celebrating National Marine Week with ‘Arty Ocean Activities’ on Wednesday 27 July between 11am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm. Get creative with the have-a-go marine art and craft activities.
If ‘Rocky Horror’ is more your thing, you could get up close and personal with some rockpool favourites on the ‘Eco-crabbing and Rockpool Rambles’ at Kimmeridge. If you’re brave enough, you could come face to face with a blenny on the ‘Snorkelling for Softies’ event on Saturday 6 August, 3pm – 4.30pm.
There is also an exciting opportunity to look out for the dolphins, seals and seabirds that inhabit local coasts at the Kimmeridge Centre ‘Shore Watch’. Find out about the majestic mammals around our shores and see if you can identify the creatures you spot on Thursday 28 July, 11am – 3pm.
The ‘Big Wild Chesil’ Event is on Sunday 7 August, 10am – 5pm. This is Chesil’s biggest wildlife event of the year promises to be a wildlife-packed day for all ages. This is a free event with music, dancing and a barbeque alongside a fantastic assortment of wildlife activities including a low tide walk, wildlife arts and crafts and a shark and ray egg case hunt.
