Fundraisers for Diverse Abilities Plus, the Dorset-based charity that supports children and adults with profound physical and learning disabilities, are taking part in the Great South Run, taking place in Portsmouth on Sunday 27 October. The charity is urging more keen runners to take part and to fill the remaining 12 places available.
The Great South Run is a fast and flat 10 mile route, taking in the iconic sites of the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard including Portsmouth Cathedral, Spinnaker Tower and the HMS Victory.
Joe Thompson, from Ferndown, is taking part in the Great South Run as one of his four challenges in 2013 for the Dorset charity. The other three challenges consist of a 20.13 mile combination of static bike ride, rowing machine and treadmill in the gym in mid-August, the Kamikaze Run in September (an eight mile obstacle course) and the Bournemouth Half Marathon at the start of October.
The work Diverse Abilities Plus undertake is very important to Joe and his wife as his son, who has autism and learning difficulties, is supported by the charity. Due to the great work of Diverse Abilities Plus, Joe’s son lives his life to the full and ensures he maximises his full potential within his reduced physical and mental capabilities. Joe said: “All funds raised from my fundraising efforts will be going to Diverse Abilities Plus to ensure they can continue with the fantastic work they do.”
To take part in the Great South Run for Diverse Abilities Plus, the entry fee is £20 and a minimum of £175 sponsorship is required per person.
To get you in training for the Great South Run, why not also sign up and raise money for Diverse Abilities Plus by taking part in the Kamikaze Adventure Run taking place in Bridport on Sunday 8 September and Bournemouth Running Festival taking place over the weekend of 5 and 6 October 2013.
