Dorset residents are being warned not to use a paid-for service to register to vote in the upcoming local elections.
On Thursday, 2 May, Dorset County Council will be asking residents to elect the authority’s members for the next four years.
It is free to register to vote, but the Electoral Commission has been alerted to a company offering a £30-a-time ‘assisted service’ to complete customers’ electoral roll registrations.
The company also uses a £1.53 a minute premium rate number to take customer questions.
Miles Butler, deputy chief executive of Dorset County Council, said, “We want to make sure that Dorset residents know it costs nothing to register to vote.
“It is important that people register to vote, as elected members make big decisions about services that affect all of our daily lives.
“Dorset County Council is responsible for a wide range of services including highways, waste management, children’s services and adult social care – so this is residents’ chance to say who they want to represent their area for the next four years.”
To be able to vote, you must be 18 or over on the day of the poll and your name must be on the electoral register.
