The Dorset artist who made headlines with her sculpture of tragic singer Amy Winehouse last year has unveiled her latest work, a sculptured portrait of Marilyn Monroe. Pokesdown-based Linda Joyce revealed the new work at a reception at the town’s Terrace Café, Bournemouth.
Like Amy, Marilyn died young. The American actress was found dead from a barbiturate overdose in 1962. She was just 36-years-old.
The sculpture depicts her at the start of a career that would see her become an international sex symbol and star of films like ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’, ‘All About Eve’ and ‘Some Like It Hot.
The work in clay will now be cast in bronze and auctioned in New York in November. It is part of a series of celebrity sculptures that have also included Jimi Hendrix and David Beckham.
Linda’s work has helped raise money for the Amy Winehouse Foundation, the Handel House Museum and Dorset based Patchwork Kids. Linda, who specialises in sculpted portraits and animal and figure studies, now hopes the sale of the Monroe sculpture will similarly raise money for charity. Editions of her Marilyn, Jimi and Amy sculptures are expected to make their first appearance together in public at the auction in New York.
