Dorset Chamber reacts to US tariffs
The Chamber is not surprised at the introduction of a 10 per cent tariff being imposed on all UK exports, but feels it is ‘a lose-lose situation’.
Dorset Chamber shares the concerns of countries across the world regarding the introduction of tariffs by the United States.
A 10 per cent tariff is being imposed on all UK exports with higher tariffs for other countries.
Chief Executive Ian Girling said: “Although not unexpected, the introduction of tariffs is incredibly disappointing, especially for the numerous businesses who export from Dorset to the United States.
“It is a lose-lose situation for everyone in the UK, US and world. No one will escape the fallout with knock-on effects throughout the supply chain and global economy.
“However, it is important to remain calm and trust in the British government’s continued negotiations with the United States.
“Tariffs can be lifted at any time and the US has signalled its willingness to do some form of deal with us.
“Many firms, especially SMEs, will now be facing difficult decisions and we urge government to do all it can to provide practical support to them.
“We would advise businesses to immediately start negotiations with their US customers on managing the impact of these tariffs.
“Depending on their contracts, there may be deals to be done. In the long term, exploring replacement markets, especially the EU [and] countries within the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), will be options.
“Support may also be available from the British Business Bank’s Growth Guarantee scheme which can offer financial support to firms with cashflow issues.
“Dorset Chamber will continue to support businesses and work with the British Chambers of Commerce to lobby government at the highest level.”
