Dorset Chamber welcomes King’s Speech – on the whole
Ian Girling, chief executive of Dorset Chamber, is pleased the new government is focussing on economic growth.
The King’s Speech given in Westminster on Wednesday has on the whole gone down well with Dorset Chamber, although there are some concerns.
Ian Girling, chief executive, said: “It was encouraging to see the new government focus on economic growth in its first King’s Speech.
“The commitment to an industrial strategy has the potential to put a much-needed framework in place to support British business in a coherent, fair and dynamic way and create the certainty required to stimulate investment.
“Measures to reform the planning system to accelerate large scale infrastructure and enable greater development are also to be welcomed along with proposals for a new Skills England agency.
“Dorset Chamber has already been working hard to support skills training to ensure that our businesses have the skilled workforces that they need through the county’s Local Skills Improvement Plan.
“I sincerely hope the government undertakes meaningful consultation with business on this initiative and the other proposed legislation in the speech.
“Some businesses in Dorset may be nervous about employment changes and the added costs and regulation that this could bring.
“As ever, the devil will be in the detail. We will work closely with the British Chamber of Commerce to make the voice of business in Dorset heard while helping businesses in the county take advantages of the opportunities and overcome the challenges that the government’s legislative agenda may being.”
