Dorset Greener Home event to promote sustainable energy ideas
Over the next two weekends, nearly 40 properties in Dorset will open their doors to showcase greener and more sustainable energy practices.
On 14, 15, 21 & 22 September, nearly 40 homes across the county will take part in the annual ‘Dorset Greener Homes’ event to showcase greener and sustainable energy installed in their homes.
This is the fourth year that homes in the area have opened their doors to the public to promote greener energy practices and help those interested in making sustainable changes to their own homes.
Some of the practices on show include: solar panels; battery storage; air and ground source heat pumps, and mechanical ventilation. Other homes will present low-cost solutions such as using natural materials which can be recycled at the end of the life of the building, and wildlife-friendly gardens.
This yearly event offers impartial advice from homeowners giving visitors detailed knowledge of the installation processes, costs, and payback times on investment. Commonly asked questions include: how noisy is a heat pump? How can I improve the insulation of my listed building? Are solar panels worth it? And how do I find a reputable installer? Visitors have found practical answers to these and many other questions.
Across the two weekends, most homes will only be open for one or two of these days and may require prior booking. Details and opening times can be found on the website www.dorsetgreenerhomes.org. The website also features videos of some of the homes. Many homes are also open outside of the event dates all year round by appointment.
The event is organised by Dorset Climate Action Network (DorsetCAN) to teach residents of the county about greener energy solutions. Learn more about their work at www.dorsetcan.org.
