Dorset History Centre to revisit summers of years gone by
A free exhibition at the Dorchester-based archive will feature photos of summer holidays in Dorset from the past 150 years.
Dorset History Centre, the county’s archive based in Dorchester, is hosting a free exhibition exploring summer holidays in the region from the past 150 years on Saturday 17 August.
The exhibit will feature original photographs of summers from the 1880s to 2010s, so visitors can expect to see images of over-dressed Victorians, hard-working Edwardians and chilly beachgoers from the 1950s.
Organised in partnership with Dorchester Camera Club, the exhibition will draw from the thousands of photos stored at the archive. The event is an opportunity to see unique material, including photographs, slides and postcards not available in digital format.
Visitors will also get the opportunity to find out how to care for their own photographic heritage, discover how photography developed, and learn how to add their own photos to the county’s archive collections to educate (or entertain) generations to come.
Alongside the display of summers past, Dorset History Centre will host contemporary Dorset photography from the Dorchester Camera Club – which itself is more than 100 years old.
The free exhibition will be on from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 17 August. To find out more visit the Council’s website.
